From Confusion to Clarity: How One Training at UDS Transformed the Way We See Data

A few weeks ago, something powerful happened on the Nyankpala campus of UDS. A room full of graduate students walked in, many unsure of what data analysis really meant beyond charts and spreadsheets.
Some of them came with questions and left with confidence. Others came with scattered datasets and left with organized solutions.
And the best part?
They didn’t need to be data experts to get there.
The Problem Everyone Faces, But Few Talk About
It usually starts the same way:
➡️ You have a thesis or a project. The supervisor says, “Go analyze your data.”
➡️ You stare at Excel… or
➡️ You Google “how to run regression in SPSS or R”…. ➡️ You panic.
Sound familiar?
That’s the exact cycle we wanted to break when Rbase Limited teamed up with GRASAG-UDS to run a from problem to solution.
What We Did Differently
Instead of jumping into complex formulas or coding, we asked one simple question:
“What problem are you trying to solve?”
Suddenly, students lit up.
➡️ A public health student wanted to analyze the policy and prevalence of teenage pregnancy.
➡️ An agric student wanted to predict poverty among smallholder farmers.
➡️ A development planning student was looking at poverty levels in rural areas.
That was the moment everything changed. Because when people saw their data as a tool to solve real problems, they stopped being afraid of it.
The Transformation
Over the course of the training, students learned how to:
✅ Clean messy datasets with confidence
✅ Ask the right questions of their data
✅ Build visual stories with charts, dashboards, and maps
✅ Draw conclusions and give recommendations that matter
✅ Present their findings like pros—even to people with no technical background
One participant said:
“I’ve been collecting data for my thesis for 6 months. After this training, I finally know what to do with it.”
Another asked:
“When is the next one? My colleagues need this!”
